JOB FUNCTION: To maximize sales and profit in the Produce Department through courteous customer service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. To greet all customers, respond to customer questions/requests and explain store policies in a courteous manner.
2. To sell, select, wrap/package the products customers want to purchase.
3. To write down customers special orders/requests.
4. To prepare/organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receipt of merchandise, unload trucks, verify the merchandise against the invoice, inspect the delivery for shortages/damage and quality, sort cases for stocking or product preparation and code date the product.
5. To clean department floors, mirrors, case, tables, cooler, freezer, production equipment, product preparation area, and shelves. Safely use cleaning equipment and cleaning/sanitation chemicals.
6. To load stocking carts/pallets, transport cases to sales floor/cooler/ freezer/product preparation area either on stocking carts or pallets, open cases, place merchandise in the designated cooler/freezer/case/ shelf/display position/area, check the product code/freshness date and "face/ front"/rotate the front row of each display.
7. To assure the safety of self, customers and co-workers by understanding and practicing store safety rules and notifying a supervisor of any potential hazard immediately. Pick up/remove all broken containers, packing materials/boxes from the sales floor or product preparation area immediately.
8. To perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by supervisors and managers, substituting for absent workers, and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to customers during peak periods of business.
9. To understand the operation, safety requirements and restraints of a baler, garbage disposal, juicer, pineapple corer, case cutter, pallet jack, forklift, intercom, pricing gun, knife, and wrapper (must be 18 years or older to operate the pallet jack, baler, and forklift).
10. To count and record individual items of merchandise for inventory.
11. To change department pricing as directed and manually price mark/label merchandise without an UPC code.
12. To evaluate product quality and move damaged/unsalable and "returnable" products from the case to the preparation area, re-processing the merchandise into a saleable form or marking the product down in price.
13. To use the proper case opening and product stacking techniques to prevent damage to product.
14. To remove trash from the aisle or product preparation area and operate the baler.
15. To change signs, light bulbs, shelf signs/tags and price markers on the case/shelf display.
16. To communicate with the department manager on problems, recommendation for change and merchandising ideas.
17. To check case and cooler/freezer temperatures 4 times daily.
18. To replenish supplies on the sales floor and in the product preparation area.
19. To record "out-of-stock" conditions and the time they occur, report to the department manager.
20. To prepare/package/label product: a) slice whole fruits and vegetables, salads, fruit baskets, nuts, candy, popcorn.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

1. Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and ability to count.
2. Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/employees concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment.
3. Able to pass basic physical examination and drug screen.
4. A stable work and educational history.
5. The ability to read and write English; able to read instructions, merchandise labels, warehouse order codes, numbers, reports, printed paper invoices and order forms.
6. Make judgments concerning the placement of merchandise on the case/shelf/display, case opening procedures, extent of unsalable product damage, conversation with customers, selling of product, display of product, use of packaging materials for product, quality of product for display and ordering of merchandise.
7. Able to open cases and stock so that products will not be damaged.
8. Able to clearly price mark/label products for customers and cashiers.
9. Good interpersonal communications.

PREFERRED:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Prior experience in a related type of job.
3. Prior experience operating a baler, case cutter, cleaning/sanitation equipment, pallet jack, forklift, intercom, pricing gun, knife, and wrapper (must be 18 years or older to operate the pallet jack, baler, and forklift).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands described below are representative of those that are required by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Mobility:

• To move cases from truck/pallet to backroom/preparation area to sales floor for preparation stocking, approximately 25 yards.
• To move cardboard/packing material to the backroom, approximately 25 yards.
• To move excess cases/damaged product from the sales floor to backroom storage, approximately 25 yards.
• To move to backroom of store for supplies/product/maintenance equipment and return, approximately 25 yards.
• To order merchandise by moving through department/display case area, approximately 25 yards.
• To check the case/cooler/freezer temperature 4 times daily, approximately 25 yards.

1. Work on tile or concrete for a maximum of 8 hours in duration.
2. Lift a maximum of 100 lbs. from 6 inches to 36 inches.
3. Lift a maximum of 100 lbs. from 6 inches to 84 inches on to overhead/ cooler/freezer storage rack.
4. Move cardboard into baler, approximately 4 feet.
5. Move a maximum of 75 lbs. up to 15 yards.
6. Pick up/move/attach signage/sort/open "face/front" (a/an) case/item/ trash from floor/shelf/cart/pallet/cooler/freezer storage.
7. Use maintenance and product transportation equipment.
8. Reach forward/down with both hands up to 36 inches to prepare and package product.
9. Use both hands to attain merchandise/cases on the top shelf of cooler/freezer storage shelves/rack, up to 84 inches from the floor.
10. Reach forward/down with both hands up to 36 inches to attain merchandise on stocking cart, or pallets.
11. Reach forward/down with both hands up to 36 inches to clean shelves/floor area or control maintenance/stocking equipment.
12. Reach forward/down/up with both hands up to 36 inches to place items on shelving/displays and in cases/freezer.
13. Reach up to full extension of arms to place signs, banners and light bulbs in place.
14. Handle labels/signs/tags.
15. Handle case cutter/utility knife.
16. Grasp and handle wet/iced/cold/metal/paper/plastic products.
17. Handle cardboard/packaging and debris.
18. Manipulate maintenance equipment handles/grasps/knobs.
19. Twist at the waist while cleaning, cutting/opening, sorting, load/ unloading, moving/removing merchandise and stocking merchandise.
20. Move stocking carts, pallet jacks (up to 500 lbs.) and maintenance equipment approximately 25 yards.
21. Move display fixtures and product preparation equipment.
22. Climb on racks, cases and shelving up to 3 feet in height.
23. Balance on cases of product and cooler rack.
24. Balance on wet, slick, dirty and debris-strewn floors.
25. Stock shelves, rotate product, and "facefront" shelves 8 inches from to floor to 48" inches in height.
26. Pick up cardboard, packaging, and debris from floor.
27. Perform maintenance and sanitation function.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

1. Inside work with extreme variations in temperature, dust and humidity from back door/compressors/cooler/preparation area.
